  Reminiscences of
Swami Lokeswarananda Maharaj

The Ramakrishna Order was started in 1897 with a dozen monks and with practically no assets. Today the Ramakrishna Mission is a movement symbolising great power for peace and happiness. The strength of the Ramakrishna Mission Movement is not in money, men or organization but the ideals it tries to present and the monks who work tireless to carry those ideals with new ideas to reach out to the people with a spirit of service to mankind.

Revered Swami Lokeswaranandaji Maharaj, a renowned monk of the Ramakrishna order was a ‘Man without Frontiers.’ He was an erudite scholar & a great visionary with the rare ability of transforming his visions into action & achievement. His life & works are shining examples of Swami Vivekananda’s Mission of ‘Man-making’.

A man of indomitable courage, he built up the multidimensional educational complex of Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission, and made it a centre for excellence in school education. For those who could not afford the luxury of school education, Swami Lokeswaranandaji created the now famous Narendrapur Lokshiksha Parishad that serves thousands of villages all over the country & The Blind boys’ Academy that has excelled as one of the leading institutions for the blind in whole of Asia. These are but only a few examples of his deep love & compassion the people – especially for children and youth, who he always used to say – ‘are the torchbearers of tomorrow’. People from all sections of society - the rich & the poor, the young & the old, the distressed & the downtrodden - found in him a friend, philosopher & guide’ irrespective of their caste or creed, religion or nationality.

During his tenure at Gol Park Ramakrishna Mission, Swami Lokeswaranandaji diversified the activities of the Institute and made it an International Cultural Centre recognized globally as an institution par excellence. He encouraged people all over the world to come & stay at the Institute & and enrich the Institute with their research on Indian Culture, heritage, philosophy & religion. He was the pioneer in establishing the Ramakrishna Vivekananda movement in Russia. As an internationally recognised speaker, he was invited to speak at Oxford, Cambridge, Humboldt & other universities throughout Europe, United States & Canada.

Born on 19th April 1909, Swami Lokeswaranandaji Maharaj left his mortal frame on 31st December, 1998. But impact of personality and his ideals of service to community through education and skill training continue to inspire those who had the privilege to know him – his disciples, students and admirers. His creative compassion, the intellectual & scholastic path that he chose to tread, his organisational skill & the radiance of his personality continue to inspire generations to come.

NANRITAM, a social welfare organization, set up by a handful of his students and admirers, inspired by the ideals of Ramakrishna-Vivekananda inculcated in them through the teachings and discourses of Swami Lokeswaranandaji Maharaj, dedicates our activities to his memory. We try to follow the path that he had shown us and pay our homage to him by celebrating his birth anniversary every year. Swami Lokewaranandaji’s centenary celebration was observed in the year 2009 with a special function followed by a year-long community-based service programme specially dedicated to his memory.
