The districts of Purulia, Bankura and West Midnapur, collectively known as Pachimnchal districts, are some of the most backward and poverty struck regions of the state. In addition, the region faced decades of socio-political unrest that had not only stunted the pace of infrastructural development in the region but also reduced the employment avenues for the youth. Ten years ago when we began work, these districts were some of the most socio-politically disturbed areas in the eastern part of India and continue to remain low on development, employment opportunities, accessibility and basic medical facilities.

Geographically the area is an arid zone with little annual rainfall but rich in mineral ores, especially iron mica and coal. The main livelihood of the people is agriculture. But the yield from agriculture is largely dependent on vagaries of nature. Water is a scarce resource which is also partially responsible for poor hygiene awareness and malnutrition, all of which leads to a range of health problems for the population.
